More About N35 Grade

N35 is a standard grade of neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) permanent magnet, known for its balanced magnetic performance and cost efficiency. It offers moderate magnetic strength and stable properties, making it suitable for a wide range of general-purpose applications. N35 magnets are commonly used in motors, magnetic assemblies, sensors, and consumer products. With a typical maximum operating temperature of about 80 °C, N35 is ideal for applications where extreme magnetic force is not required but reliable and economical performance is essential.

Manufacturing Process

Magnetic Field Alignment and Pressing

The fine powder is compacted into green compacts using either axial or isostatic pressing under a strong magnetic field. This magnetic alignment orients the crystal grains in a preferred direction, significantly enhancing the magnet's anisotropic properties and energy density.

Vacuum Sintering

The pressed compacts are sintered in a high-temperature vacuum furnace. During sintering, particles bond metallurgically, and the magnet reaches near-full density. This step determines the final magnetic performance and structural strength of the magnet.

Heat Treatment (Aging)

After sintering, the magnets undergo precise heat treatment to stabilize the microstructure, optimize coercivity, and improve resistance to demagnetization, especially for high-temperature applications

FAQ

Q1 How does magnet coating affect reliability and lifetime?

NdFeB magnets are highly susceptible to corrosion. Coating selection depends on environment and application:
Ni-Cu-Ni: Good general-purpose protection, decorative finish.
Epoxy: Superior corrosion resistance, suitable for humid or marine environments.
Zn: Economical, moderate protection.
Parylene: Thin, uniform coating for precision or medical applications.
Improper coating choice can lead to oxidation, strength loss, or mechanical failure.

Q2 Can NdFeB magnets be customized for specific magnetic field distributions?

Yes. Magnetic performance can be tailored through:
Grade selection
Geometry optimization
Magnetization pattern (axial, diametrical, multi-pole, radial)
Assembly design (magnet arrays, Halbach arrays)
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is commonly used to simulate and optimize field distribution.

Q3 What tolerances are achievable for NdFeB magnets?

Typical dimensional tolerances:
Sintered NdFeB: ±0.05 mm to ±0.1 mm (depending on size and shape)
Precision grinding: Tighter tolerances possible but increase cost
Magnetic property tolerances (Br, Hcj) are defined by industry standards but may vary between production lots.
